After a Pig completes a pipeline cleaning and product recovery cycle, material can remain on the end frames, sealing lips, and structural gaps of the Pig. In multi-product production, these residues may cause cross-contamination. For hygienic applications such as food and beverage, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and high-cleanliness coatings, a Self-Cleaning Pig Station uses a sealed Pig storage valve and dedicated cleaning system to automatically clean the Pig, reducing residual buildup and cross-contamination risks.

In lubricant, coating, food and beverage, and dairy production, a Pig returns to the Pig Station after recovering product from the pipeline. Material can remain around the Pig’s end frames and sealing lips. Cleaning only the pipeline while neglecting the Pig itself can allow residual material to enter the pipeline during the next pigging cycle, increasing the risk of batch carryover and cross-contamination.
A standard Pig Station is designed mainly for Pig launching, receiving, and storage. It does not provide dedicated cleaning of the Pig itself. BJVP Self-Cleaning Pig Station addresses this issue by separating Pig storage from the production line and providing an automatic cleaning process for the Pig.
Sealed Pig Storage Valve: Reduce Material Buildup
The Self-Cleaning Pig Station is equipped with a dedicated isolation and storage valve. After a pigging cycle, the Pig is held in an independent storage chamber.
- The isolation valve separates the Pig storage chamber from the process line, preventing process material from entering the storage area.
- The Pig is not continuously immersed in process material, reducing material buildup around the end frames, sealing lips, and structural gaps.
- The isolated storage chamber provides a controlled environment for the subsequent Pig cleaning process.
Automatic Pig Cleaning System: Full-Surface Cleaning
When the Pig needs to be reused, the system automatically starts the cleaning cycle. Cleaning fluid enters a dedicated cleaning circuit and washes the entire Pig inside a closed chamber, with particular attention to areas where material is likely to accumulate:
- Pig end frames and structural gaps
- Sealing lip areas
- All external surfaces of the Pig
After cleaning, the residual cleaning liquid is drained. The cleaned Pig can then be returned to the pipeline for the next pigging cycle, helping prevent residual material from previous batches from entering new production.

When Is a Self-Cleaning Pig Station Recommended?
Recommended applications: food and beverage, dairy, pharmaceutical, cosmetics, and high-cleanliness coatings. These industries often involve frequent product changes and strict hygiene requirements, making Pig cleaning an important part of contamination control.
- Multi-Product, Multi-Batch Production
Food and beverage, coatings, inks, lubricants, and adhesive production lines often switch between different products. Residual material can remain on the Pig end frames and sealing lips, increasing the risk of batch cross-contamination and product loss without proper Pig cleaning. - Hygienic and High-Cleanliness Applications
Pharmaceutical ingredients, dairy products, fine chemicals, and food ingredients require strict hygiene control. The Pig should be cleanable through a CIP-compatible process and should not remain immersed in process material for extended periods. - High-Viscosity or Fast-Setting Materials
High-viscosity coatings, resins, and paste-like materials can adhere to the Pig sealing lips and structural areas. If residues dry or solidify during downtime, they may affect subsequent pigging operations and contaminate the next product batch. - Frequent Pigging and Product Changeover
For short production cycles and frequent product changes, Pigs repeatedly enter and leave the pipeline. Automatic in-line cleaning after each recovery cycle reduces the need for manual Pig removal and cleaning. - Export Projects and GMP or Food Hygiene Applications
For international projects and applications subject to GMP or food-contact hygiene requirements, the Pig recovery unit may require a dedicated cleaning chamber to separate the process material area from the Pig storage area. - Closed Pipelines Where Manual Pig Cleaning Is Not Practical
In fully enclosed process pipelines, the Pig cannot be removed for manual cleaning. A Self-Cleaning Pig Station enables automatic in-line cleaning and can be integrated with the plant CIP system.

Standard Pig Station for conventional applications: For single-product, low-viscosity applications with low material adhesion and limited cross-contamination risk, a standard Pig Station can be a more economical option. It provides reliable Pig launching, receiving, and storage while helping control overall project costs.
Pigging Technology for Product Recovery
A complete Pigging System can clean a pipeline in approximately 1 minute, with product recovery rates of up to 99.6% or higher and pipeline residuals controlled below 1%, depending on the process conditions, pipeline design, and line length. By recovering valuable product and reducing residual material in the pipeline, pigging technology can lower material waste and cleaning-related disposal costs. In some applications, the equipment investment can be recovered within 3–6 months.
Key product-contact components can be designed to meet FDA food-contact requirements, making the system suitable for high-frequency, multi-product fluid processing applications.
